Curious how to pair your Apple iPhone to your new Ford using Apple CarPlay? Below you will find a simple step-by-step guide on the process.
Apple CarPlay® puts your iPhone's maps, calls, messages and music on your Ford's SYNC® touchscreen so you can use them with fewer distractions. If your Ford has SYNC 3, SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A, setup is quick. In most cases you plug in your phone or pair it once, and CarPlay takes it from there.
How to Set Up Apple CarPlay in Your Ford
Before you start
- Start your Ford and leave it in Park.
- Make sure Siri is turned on in your iPhone's Settings.
- Have the right cable ready. Use a cable that fits both your iPhone (USB-C on iPhone 15 and newer, Lightning on older models) and your Ford's USB port. A direct cable works better than an adapter. Charge-only cables often won't work, so use an Apple cable or a certified data cable.
Any iPhone 5 or newer works with CarPlay.
Choose your connection type
Not sure which SYNC system your Ford has? Check your owner's manual or the list of compatible models below. SYNC 3 connects with a USB cable. SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A can connect with a USB cable or over Bluetooth, depending on your vehicle.
Option A: SYNC 3 (USB cable)
- Make sure Siri is on in your iPhone's settings.
- Plug your iPhone into your Ford's USB port.
- Tap Allow on your iPhone to finish setup.
- CarPlay launches on the SYNC 3 touchscreen.
Option B: SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A (USB cable)
- Plug your iPhone into your Ford's USB port.
- Select Start Apple CarPlay when the pop-up message appears on your Ford's screen.
- An Apple CarPlay icon appears in the left side menu of the touchscreen.
Option C: SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A over Bluetooth (new iPhone)
- Tap Phone on the SYNC screen, then select Add Phone.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select your Ford.
- Confirm that the PIN on your iPhone matches the one on the SYNC screen, tap Yes on SYNC, then tap Pair on your iPhone.
- Choose whether to sync contacts and favorites when your iPhone asks.
- When Use CarPlay with SYNC? appears on your iPhone, select Use CarPlay.
- When the SYNC screen asks if you'd like to enable CarPlay, tap Enable.
Option D: SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A with an iPhone that's already paired
- Tap Settings on the SYNC screen.
- Select Phone List.
- Touch your iPhone in the list.
- Select Enable.
Using Apple CarPlay With SYNC
Once you're connected, press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel and talk to Siri. Try "Show me the best places to get pizza near me," then pick a spot and Siri takes you there. Some features may be locked out while your Ford is in gear.
From the touchscreen or by voice, you can:
- Make phone calls and send texts hands-free
- Listen to podcasts, audiobooks and Apple Music
- Get directions with Apple Maps
Third-party apps work with CarPlay as long as they support it. CarPlay needs an iPhone with an active data plan.
Turn Apple CarPlay Off
- SYNC 3: Select Settings, swipe and press Apple CarPlay Preferences, choose your phone, tap the drop-down arrow and press Disable.
- SYNC 4: Press Settings, tap Phone List, select your phone and press Disable.
- SYNC 4A: Tap Settings or the Home icon, choose Phone List and press Disable Apple CarPlay.
Normal SYNC functionality resumes when CarPlay is disabled.
Apple CarPlay Not Connecting? Try These Fixes
If CarPlay won't connect or stops working, go through these one at a time and test after each. They follow guidance from Apple and Ford.
- Restart your iPhone and turn your Ford off and on again.
- Try a different cable and a different USB port. A worn or charge-only cable is a common cause of wired problems.
- Check that CarPlay isn't restricted: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
- If you turned CarPlay off in SYNC before, turn it back on from the Phone List.
- Update your iPhone in Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check for a SYNC software update on Ford's software updates page.
- Connecting wirelessly? Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, then tap the CarPlay network in Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure Auto-Join is on.
- Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your Ford, tap Forget This Car, and set up CarPlay again.
- Still stuck? Resetting the SYNC system can help, and your owner's manual has the steps for your vehicle. You can also schedule a service appointment with AutoNation Ford Frisco and our team will take a look.
